About the Role
As a Supplier Quality Engineer (Mechanical), you will ensure that mechanical parts and assemblies supplied by external manufacturing partners meet demanding quality, reliability, and manufacturing standards.
You will manage supplier quality activities across the full lifecycle, from supplier selection and qualification to performance management, change control, issue resolution, and continuous improvement.
Working closely with Supply Chain, Engineering, AIT, Quality, and external suppliers, you will address supplier quality issues, mitigate risks, and ensure manufacturing processes can reliably support increasing production volumes.
This role is particularly suited to engineers from aerospace, defence, automotive, industrial manufacturing, or other high-reliability environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead supplier preselection, qualification, and audit activities to assess manufacturing capabilities, maturity, and compliance.
- Define and communicate technical and quality requirements to suppliers.
- Monitor supplier performance across quality, delivery, NCR rates, and responsiveness, driving improvement actions where required.
- Manage supplier change requests, part/process approvals, and configuration control with Engineering and Configuration Management.
- Lead supplier part qualification activities, including FAI, PPAP, or equivalent processes.
- Identify and proactively mitigate supplier-related quality, manufacturing, and delivery risks.
- Collaborate with Design and AIT Engineering teams to improve the manufacturability and inspectability of mechanical parts and assemblies.
- Implement and monitor supplier improvement plans to increase supplier maturity and performance.
- Act as the primary contact for supplier-related non-conformances, deviations, and waivers.
- Lead structured root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) with suppliers.
Requirements
Required
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in Supplier Quality, Manufacturing Quality, or a similar engineering role.
- Strong experience with supplier quality management for mechanical parts and assemblies, including machined parts, composites, or electromechanical assemblies.
- Good understanding of CNC machining, surface treatments, assembly processes, and inspection methodologies.
- Experience with supplier audits, qualification processes such as FAI/PPAP, and supplier performance monitoring.
- Experience managing non-conformances, root cause analysis (8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa), and CAPA.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, GD&T, 3D CAD models, specifications, and material standards.
- Understanding of traceability, configuration control, and engineering change management.
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
- Ability to effectively manage suppliers and influence stakeholders without direct authority.
- Proactive, hands-on working style with a high level of ownership.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
Nice to Have
- Experience evaluating and approving special processes, such as heat treatment, coatings, or NDT.
- Experience with ERP and MES systems in production environments.
- Experience in aerospace, defence, automotive, space, or other high-reliability manufacturing industries.
- Experience working with complex, low-volume/high-mix mechanical products.
- Familiarity with quality standards and requirements applicable to aerospace or mission-critical hardware.
